Colorado Ski Resort Catches First Snowflakes of the Season on Camera
Temperatures are dropping, and flakes are starting to fly in Summit County, Colorado. Keystone Resort’s North Peak webcams picked up a little flurry of snow on Wednesday night around 8 p.m.
Wednesday evening, temperatures dropped into the high 40s at Keystone, and rain in the forecast turned to snow at higher elevations. Although there wasn’t much accumulation, it’s a sure sign that winter is on its way in Colorado’s high country.
According to OpenSnow’s Colorado forecast, many Colorado mountains received a fair bit of precipitation this week, although the vast majority came in the form of rain.
Going into the weekend, there’s more precipitation in the forecast, and snow levels are starting to drop below the summits of the state’s highest peaks. It’s possible that Keystone could see a bit more snow on Sunday, September 20, and late next week towards the first of the month.
This upcoming weekend is Keystone’s final bike park weekend of the summer season. With precipitation in the forecast, the dirt should be excellent for a last couple of lift-accessed bike laps. The resort’s Oktoberfest celebration is also scheduled to take place next weekend, on September 26, at the Ski Tip Lodge.
Keystone is hoping to open as soon as possible for the 2026-27 winter season. Last season, Keystone claimed the title of first resort to open in North America with an opening date of October 25. Winter Park and Arapahoe Basin are also hoping to open ASAP, depending on conditions. While Mother Nature has the final say on that one, continued cold weather could certainly help with snowmaking efforts during the off-season.
