Meteorologist Chris Tomer Forecasts Potential Snowfall For Montana This Weekend
Meteorologist Chris Tomer is tracking an increasingly active weather pattern across Montana that could bring the first meaningful snowfall of the season to some higher elevation ski terrain this weekend. Lingering moisture is currently affecting western Montana and northern Idaho, with snow levels remaining very high around 9,500 to 10,000 feet. That is expected to change as two cold fronts move through the region.
Montana Could See Snow This Weekend
The first cold front is expected Friday, but the more significant system arrives Saturday night into Sunday. Tomer expects freezing levels to fall toward 7,000 feet, potentially allowing rain and snow to mix at elevations in the upper 6,000s.
The best chance for accumulating snow will be above 7,000 feet, with Tomer’s forecast showing roughly six to 10 inches possible across some of the highest terrain if the current setup holds.
The areas around Glacier National Park and northern Montana appear particularly favored. Snow could also reach the higher terrain near Big Sky and the Absaroka Beartooth region. Resorts including Big Sky Resort and Whitefish Mountain Resort could see the first notable snowfall of the season, although temperatures and snow levels will determine how much accumulation actually reaches resort elevations.
Temperatures Set To Drop
Tomer’s forecast calls for temperatures to fall sharply behind the weekend cold fronts. Around Kalispell, high temperatures could drop into the 50s while overnight lows approach the 30s. The forecast also shows precipitation spreading northward Sunday morning before gradually moving east and drying out later in the day.
This pattern could become increasingly common as September progresses, with more cold fronts bringing snow potential to Montana’s mountains. Tomer also noted increasing precipitation signals across Colorado and Utah during the next 10 days.
