Alta Ski Area To Debut Lodge Remodel and Expansion Next Winter
Alta Ski Area’s known for a throwback, encased-in-amber vibe. It’s a place with world-famous terrain that, despite its popularity and ubiquity, somehow doesn’t feel like a cookie-cutter, ritzy destination.
Still, even the classic haunts need to make updates. For Alta this summer, that looks like an overhaul of the Albion Basin lodge, a project that’s spanned multiple years and will be ready in time for the start of the 2026-27 ski season.
In an email, Lexi Dowdall, Alta’s communications manager, called the project a “HUGE deal for us.”
The remodel includes 3,400 square feet of additional dining space and expanded patio seating for the Albion Grill framed by “enormous windows and mountain views,” according to a blog post published by Alta. The existing dining space is being remodeled to match the new look.
Other skier amenities include a lounge area, a fireplace with benches, restrooms, and several locker bays. The east wing addition will also house 12 employee housing units, a large conference room, and several new administrative offices.
Dowdall noted that the apartments “will help support the dedicated staff that lives up at Alta to ensure we can dig out of storms, operate snow cats, run lifts, perform avalanche mitigation, sell tickets and all the other mission critical duties it takes to run a ski area—especially when Highway 210 is closed!”
Dowdall also said that she’s involved with a committee to sort out the lodge’s interior spaces, including selecting historical Alta photos, many of which haven’t been seen before.

The exterior, according to the blog post, was meant to “complement the rugged landscape and natural elements of Little Cottonwood Canyon,” with avalanche shutters on the windows sourced from local Pinewood. The base of the building uses hand-hewn blocks of granite rock found onsite at Alta and chiseled by a family of stonemasons whose work appears in other buildings around the ski area.
The lodge remodel joins a few less noticeable tweaks to Alta’s slopes this summer. Two traverses, the High Traverse and Ballroom, are being hand-cut and widened, making it easier to get to the terrain they access once winter starts. As the blog post pointed out, hand-cut traverses hold coverage better during periods of low snow.
The summer work also involves replacing aging snowmaking lines between Watson Shelter and the Corkscrew ski run and a few new parking lot stalls in the Wildcat area.
When can you check out the new lodge (or traverses)? Alta, like many other Western ski areas last season, dealt with delays but tends to kick the party off towards the end of November. Park City, another Utah resort, plans to open on November 20 while Brian Head is aiming for November 6.
