Search And Rescue Group Warns Of Tire-Puncturing Booby Traps On Vancouver Island Bike Trails

BRITISH COLUMBIA, Canada – Metal spike devices known as caltrops have been discovered on local bike trails Vancouver Island’s Comox Valley. In response, Comox Valley Search and Rescue is warning trail and road users to exercise extreme caution.
CVSAR confirmed that it has been made aware of the devices and noted that similar objects may have also been spotted on roads near Lake Trail. Caltrops are multi-pointed metal spikes designed to puncture tires and can cause serious injury to cyclists, pedestrians, dogs, and other trail users regardless of orientation.
The organization is urging anyone using trails or roads in the area to stay alert and watch the ground carefully, particularly in corners, narrow sections, road shoulders, and anywhere that swerving to avoid a hazard would be difficult.
Anyone with information about the devices is encouraged to contact local authorities. CVSAR is also asking the public to help spread the word by sharing the warning with other riders, hikers, and drivers who frequent the area.
