Giant Drones Are Taking the Heavy Lifting Out of Mountain Search and Rescue

Drone carries a rescue litter in the mountains of Germany.

Technology is rapidly changing the world around us in just about every single thing we do. Some of those changes may be questionable or stressful, but there are plenty that could genuinely save lives. The DJI FlyCart 100 drone is one of those live-saving pieces of technology.

Grander Air Logistics shared footage showing how rescue crews are training with the massive drone, using it to carry litters and other rescue equipment up mountains. This footage comes from Jochberg, a mountain in southern Germany.

The FlyCart 100 features a winch system built into the drone, LiDAR, a Penta-Vision System, a Millimeter-Wave Radar, ultra fast charging, and an 85 kg Max Payload Capacity with Dual Battery. A ~187 pound payload capacity probably isn’t enough to carry a person, but it’s more than enough to bring rescue equipment up a mountain, significantly reducing the amount of work required from Search and Rescue staff.

It’s a seriously impressive piece of technology, and the time it might save could literally save lives. Helicopters will likely remain as a pretty necessary piece of search and rescue equipment for a while, but we might not be that far away from drones carrying injured hikers away from mountains.
