Climbers Capture the Wild Moment an Avalanche Hits Their Tent On Mount Everest

Massive Everest avalanche cloud captured on camera.

Climbing Mount Everest comes with a wide range of real dangers, including ustable seracs, deep crevasses, illness caused by high altitude, freezing temperatures, and much more. Avalanches are among the most well known of risks, responsible for the most deaths on the world’s tallest mountain.

Climber Oliver Foran captured this avalanche from his tent at Camp 1 alongside fellow climber Stan Gaskell. The slide released from Lho La, barreling toward the camp and eventually hitting their tent. Fortunately it appears that they were hit by the powdery cloud created by the avalanche rather than the avalanche itself, and (as far as they knew) nobody was injured in the slide.

Oliver is climbing Everest in partnership with Youturn to support Youth Mental Health. He started the journey at the sea, cycling around 715 miles across India and Nepal before beginning a ~93 mile trek through the Himalayas. Before reaching the world’s tallest mountain, Oliver did a acclimatization climb on Mera Peak, a 21,247 foot mountain located south of Everest.

If you’re interested in Oliver’s journey, make sure you give him a follow on social media and consider donating to the cause here. In his last update, he stated that his summit push had officially begun, so make sure to follow along for when he (hopefully) reaches the highest point in the world.
