Mammoth Mountain, California, Extends Ski Season Beyond Memorial Day

Mammoth Mountain isn’t ready to call it on their second season just yet.

The California ski area has announced a season extension that will make it one of the last open ski areas in North America. Mammoth will be spinning lifts at least through May 31, the mountain announced on Thursday, nearly a whole week longer than they’d initially announced.

Starting May 26, Mammoth will be spinning Broadway Express, Face Lift Express, and Chair 23 daily from 7:30 am until 1 pm. The main lodge will also remain open for food, beverages, rentals, repairs, and lessons.

Mammoth is still holding a base of 125 inches at its summit and 38 inches at the base. Thanks to the ski area’s high elevation and winds that keep temperatures cool up high, hanging onto snowpack and late-season storms like the few that have come through this spring is a little easier.

Although operations are set to carry on until Mammoth until May 31, they have not confirmed that as their official closing day.

The season extension will also make Mammoth the last open ski area in California, after Palisades Tahoe’s planned closure on May 24.

A few other resorts have late-season plans across North America. Timberline Lodge in Oregon is currently expected to stay open as long as Mammoth, and it has a season that usually runs well into the summer months. In Canada, Banff Sunshine Village is planning to re-open for sixteen more days starting on June 20.

If more spring skiing wasn’t enough good news coming out of Mammoth Mountain, the ski area is also opening many of its summer activities prior to its ski season closing. Mammoth’s bike park opens for the season on May 22 and offers 80-plus miles of singletrack trails for downhill bikers of all levels.

If triple sport days are your thing, Mammoth Mountain’s two golf courses are already open for the season. You can ski, bike, and play a nine or 18-hole course to top off the day, starting on May 22.
