Alta Ski Area Adds Pricey Fines for Skiers Who No-Show Parking Reservations
Alta is far from the only ski area to implement weekend and holiday parking reservations, but a new rule for Winter 26/27 is being celebrated among the Alta faithful.
Parking is limited in Little Cottonwood Canyon, and while Alta’s parking reservations have mitigated some overcrowding and traffic woes in recent years, many skiers have been frustrated by the number of no-shows on a given weekend.
Alta skiers, it seems, have a tendency to book a scrupulous amount of parking reservations for weekends in the future, only to not show up, and ultimately hurt another skier’s chances of scoring a reservation. That will change in Winter 26/27.
“Missed a parking reservation? Your first no-show is a warning,” writes Alta in its updated Parking Information webpage. “After that, a $100 fee applies for each no-show.”
Alta requires free parking reservations for passholders and $25 reservations for non-passholders, Friday–Sunday & Holiday Periods from 8 a.m.–1 p.m., starting on December 11, 2026. Reservations are made with the skier’s license plate number. License plates with reservations that aren’t scanned in Alta’s parking lot, presumably, will incur a fine.

Fines for no-shows could lead to some headaches for Alta Ski Area, namely in emergency situations in which a skier has more pressing matters to attend to than their parking reservation, but the warning on the first offense should mitigate some of these issues.
Palisades Tahoe, California, uses a similar system, and while some bad actors show up without parking reservations every weekend, the threat of a monetary fine has encouraged skiers to cancel their reservations when they know they can’t make it. Palisades typically opens up these canceled reservations on Friday evenings, allowing for spur-of-the-moment skiers to secure a reservation hours before the lifts start spinning.
It’s a bit messy, but it largely works.
Fines for no-shows aren’t the only changes coming to Alta Ski Area’s parking reservation system for Winter 26/27. The ski area also announced the following updates:
- A maximum of four (4) active—free and paid—reservations per account at any time.
- If available, same-day reservations can be made and don’t count towards your limit of four.
- Skiers will receive a parking reminder SMS text message 24 hours before their parking reservation starts.
