Mt. Hutt To Invest $12 Million On New Base Building
New Zealand’s Mt. Hutt Ski Area is prepping to make some big upgrades. Following the resort’s closing day, demolition of the old ski school building, which has stood since roughly 1980, will begin to make way for a new structure.
In place of the old building, Mt. Hutt is building a new base area structure, complete with a heated outdoor sundeck that will nearly triple the size of the old deck, from 430 sqm to 1300 sqm.
In addition, the project will include the construction of a new ground-floor toilet block, improved heated access steps to snow, another cafe outlet, and more storage space for staff and guests.
Overall, the project seeks to improve space and functionality at the base area. Mt. Hutt Ski Area manager, James McKenzie, told snowsbest.com that the new space will make a real difference as the mountain has gotten busier over time. It also gives them the opportunity to introduce a new food and beverage outlet.
“We’re also creating a foundation that will allow us to continue to grow sustainably in line with future demand,” said McKenzie.
The project is slated to cost $12 million and should be completed ahead of the 2027 winter season.
In recent years, the ski area has also made investments in snowmaking and new lifts to lengthen and improve its winter season. Mt. Hutt also hopes to be carbon neutral by 2030 with initiatives to reduce carbon emissions, utilize renewable energy, and engage in environmental restoration projects across the mountain. The ski area has already reduced emissions by more than 50% and aims to continue reducing them by 5% each year.
Mt. Hutt is still open for the 2026 winter season until October 12, 2026.
