Loon Proposes Massive Expansion That Includes Four Lifts and a New Peak

Hot on the heels of a previously announced terrain expansion, Loon Mountain, New Hampshire, has shared plans to push its boundaries even further, tacking on an additional 280 skiable acres, another peak, and four new ski lifts.

The proposed area borders the current South Peak area, just over the boundary line next to the Timber Town quad. Brian Norton, president and general manager of Loon Mountain, said in a release that it’ll deliver on progression, with the lower trails giving skiers and snowboarders the confidence to move up.

“At the same time, it gives experienced skiers more of what they’re looking for: from classic, winding New England trails and wide-open cruisers to challenging tree skiing. I picture many guests spending an entire day on this peak alone,” he said.

Of the 280 proposed skiable acres, 145 are intended for traditional ski trails, while 135 are proposed for tree-skiing areas. The four lifts would carry guests up roughly 1,500 vertical feet, with a lodge planned at the summit.

Loon Mountain doesn’t own the mixed private and public land. Most of it falls under the White Mountain National Forest. The Forest Service has issued a letter accepting the proposal for review, and the project—as is standard with resort expansions on public land—will need to undergo an Environmental Assessment.

South Peak Resort owns the private land and its developer, Mark Bogosian, expressed his support for the expansion in the release.

“We’re excited to keep moving it forward for the region,” he said.

Loon Mountain noted in the release that an expansion of this scale will roll out in phases, adding that it can’t yet share timelines. The Environmental Assessment is expected to take a year, and while conceptual trail and lift layouts are in place, they’re flexible and can adapt to public feedback, operational needs, and environmental considerations.

It’s already been a busy few years for Loon Mountain. In 2023, the resort added the Timbertown Quad and, during the 2027-28 season, it plans to debut Black Ridge, 272 acres of new gate-access terrain to the east catered to expert skiers. At full build-out, the resort hopes to offer 955 skiable acres, a 137% increase from its current footprint. But next winter, with the addition of Black Ridge, Loon Mountain will already span 675 acres, making it the largest ski resort in New Hampshire.
