Snowy British Columbia Ski Resort Adds 190 Acres of New Terrain for Next Winter

Another terrain expansion is coming to British Columbia’s Whitewater Mountain Resort, adding 190 acres to the ski area’s footprint with six new runs, along with other improvements made during the warmer months.

The change comes to a wooded area called Short Side, which, historically, has been outside Whitewater’s ski area boundary between the Sproulers and Giddy Up Gully runs.

To clear the way, Whitewater worked with F2 Logging, whose crew spent about a month combing through the area and completed more than 120 acres of glading. The resort also added new road construction and two new ski ways.

Those changes, Whitewater explained in a blog post about the expansion, “will help move skiers and riders from Buckshot toward the Shrine and back to the Backside Ski Way, creating a natural connection between Short Side and Whitewater’s existing trail network.”

“The result is … the fall-line skiing, gladed terrain, and classic Whitewater character that make this part of the mountain so special,” the post added.

The expansion comes alongside a flurry of off-season work at Whitewater, including more glading and tree work outside Short Side on pre-existing runs, lift maintenance, and excavation aimed at making it easier to groom some trails when there’s less snow.

On Bonanza, the blue trail that winds back to the Summit Chair, a spider excavator worked for two weeks to redistribute rocks and improve the slope. In the past, the slopes required around 50 inches of snow before it could be groomed. The hope is to bring that required total to around 40 inches.

Located outside Nelson and known for a heaping average snow total of about 472 inches, Whitewater has spent the past few seasons gradually expanding its lift fleet and terrain footprint. In 2023, the resort opened the Raven lift with 123 acres of terrain and 14 new groomed and gladed runs. The next season, Whitewater brought the Goat Slide area officially into the fold. After the opening of Raven, the zone had been starting to see more skier traffic but wasn’t previously within Whitewater’s boundaries.

Whitewater plans to kick the season off on December 4, 2026.
