New Cabins Unwrapped for One of North America's Largest Aerial Tramway Systems
Brand new, shiny tramway cabins are being unwrapped as Grouse Mountain, British Columbia, prepares to debut an updated version of its classic Red Skyride.
The cabins look much like those installed at Snowbird, Utah, in 2022, featuring angled front and back windows and a modern look.
Doppelmayr Canada said in a social media post that the installation marked a “milestone in the modernization of the iconic Skyride aerial tramway,” adding that it was “another step forward in enhancing the guest experience while preserving a true Vancouver landmark.”
Grouse Mountain announced that while the Red Skyride’s new cabins were being installed, the Blue Grouse Gondola would provide access to the mountain. The ski area added that more information about the new Red Skyride cabins was coming soon, alongside sharing a vintage photo of its predecessor, still wrapped up.
The ski resort above Vancouver debuted the Red Skyride in 1976 with big, iconic cabins, establishing one of North America’s largest aerial tramway systems with views of the city, to boot. Today, the alignment connects Grouse Mountain’s parking lot with the ski slopes, alongside the Blue Grouse Gondola, which replaced the original Blue Tram with faster access in 2024.
Before being decommissioned, the Blue Skyride was mainly used for freight and emergencies.
The Red Skyride upgrade follows a slew of improvements to Grouse Mountain in recent years. Groundbreaking began in 2022 for the Blue Grouse, and the gondola opened two years later in December with 27 eight-person cabins and an average trip time of 5.5 minutes, allowing the new lift to operate at a capacity of 1,000 people per hour.

In 2025, Grouse Mountain also revived its bike park after more than two decades, adding a new option for bike access on the North Shore, and opened a new gravity coaster this spring. The updated Red Skyride cabins come as Grouse Mountain celebrates its 100th anniversary.
It’s not the only ski resort activity outside Vancouver. Grouse’s neighbor, Cypress Mountain, will restart its bike park next summer. Both Cypress Mountain and Mount Seymour—the third Vancouver-area ski resort—recently shared new long-term plans.
