New Ski Video Game Lets You Explore a Beautifully-Rendered Mountain at Your Own Pace

Most ski games, from SSX: On Tour to Steep, come with a goal in mind. Either explicitly or implicitly, the moment you sit down with the sticks, you’re trying to rack up a combo multiplier or, in the case of an upcoming ski tycoon game, boost visitation without going into debt.

That’s not the case in The Vast White. In the game, you play as a little mouse on a ski trip exploring a beautifully rendered resort while meeting and helping other animals along the way.

The demo, which is available now, begins with a revelation. You’re the only passenger on a bus cruising into the mountains, and the driver—a crocodile, of course—informs you that your destination has seen better days. Big Sky or Palisades Tahoe, this is not. The lifts are busted, the slopes are empty, and the snow, in some places, is thin.

Before long, you’re involved in bringing the mountain back to life after the safety director—a moose, this time—assumes you’re a volunteer. What follows is a series of quests interspersed with exploratory laps down the mountain, all at your own pace. You can help the animals or, you know, just look around the world, fixing lifts to open new areas. During my time with the demo, another animal gave me a fishing rod, and I met the owner of the pink base area cafe, an insatiable gossip.

To those familiar, the game resembles the Grand Mountain Adventure series, but with less emphasis on challenges. You’re skiing or snowboarding, yes, but that’s almost tertiary, serving as a way to get from one view or new furry friend to the next. The art style and approach align somewhat with the “walking simulator” genre, in a good way—that is, games focused on experiencing the environment, the story, and the characters rather than edge-of-your-seat gameplay. It’s chill. Still, I did bump into a slalom course where I could test my mettle.

All told, based on the demo, The Vast White taps into the feeling you might get before the internet: the wonderment of pulling into the parking lot of a ski resort you’ve heard a bit about but never visited. No top ten list directs you to an epic tram or the best lift. While the good stuff is there, you’ll have to go and find it yourself. I learned that getting friendly with the locals is the best way to start. Just like real life.

The Vast White releases on Steam on November 10, 2026.
