Le Grand-Bornand Takes The Cake
All of France celebrates Epiphany with the galette des rois, the ‘king cake’, but ski area Le Grand-Bornand really pulls out all the stops in early January.
It serves up a gigantic 1.7 m cake made by the Maison Bétemps, the only artisan bakery with an oven capable of handling anything so huge. It serves 300 and takes 6-7 bakers 2 hours to bake at over 170°, using 20 kg of puff pastry, frangipane and fèves (the ceramic figurines you find inside the cake to become ‘king’ for the day).
The ESF ski instructors carry the fabulous cake to the village square before everyone gets a taste. It’s bigger than the one in Paris, serves 300 people and has 20 lucky charms hidden inside it!
