1000cm And Counting: It Won't Stop Snowing at Ski Portillo, Chile

The snow keeps piling up at Ski Portillo, Chile.

A record-breaking storm dumped more than 200 inches (508cm) of snow in less than a week at Ski Portillo in July, and while there have been breaks in the weather (as expected), the snow keeps finding its way back to the resort with an iconic yellow hotel and unique surface lifts.

Following an over-performing storm that dumped 22 inches (55cm) at Ski Portillo over the last seven days, the resort is reporting a whopping 401 inches (1021cm) of snow on the season. 400 inches may not seem like a ton for the powder-blessed skiers of Alta, Alyeska, and Mt. Baker, but Ski Portillo averages just 200 inches per season.

Translation: Ski Portillo has twice its average snow, and there could be more on the way.

OpenSnow is forecasting up to 4 inches (10cm) could fall on Ski Portillo by the end of the week, and another, much larger system is tracking to hit at the beginning of October. That storm could dump another 20+ inches (50cm) through the first week of October.

Ski Portillo usually closes for the season at the end of September, but the resort has extended its operations through October 11, 2026, due to the increase in snowfall.

Reservations are still available for October 1-October 11, and we have it on good authority that the snow is expected to hold up well for the remainder of the season.
