An Unusual "Ski-Thru" Subway Is Opening in the Mountains of New Zealand
Fancy a slopeside sub? How about one that isn’t a five-dollar footlong—but free?
You might be in luck, depending on your proximity to Tūroa, a New Zealand ski resort. In a hilarious marketing stunt, the mountain has partnered with Subway to host the country’s first ski-thru Subway for three days, from Friday, September 18, to Sunday, September 20.
The bright green shack, located atop Tūroa’s Parklane Chairlift, will sling free pre-made subs (dragging an entire deli line up the mountain would probably be a nightmare, after all), cookies, and hot chocolate from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. each day. Along with the cold cuts and cookies, Tūroa is stationing a DJ at the Subway outpost to keep the stoke up and offering some themed merch while supplies last.
The shack’s opening is contingent on the weather and snow conditions.
The Subway pop-up recalls another slopeside fast food operation that you may recognize.
In Sweden, at the ski resort Lindvallen, there’s a ski-thru McDonald’s (the only of its kind in the world, with a cute nickname to match: McSki). Complete with indoor seating and an outdoor window that remixes the usual McDonald’s setup—you ski through, not drive through—the restaurant’s a funky and unique bit of Americana that, for some reason, appeared in Scandinavia rather than, you know, the not-so-far-flung birthplace of the Golden Arches: San Bernardino, California.
Same goes for Subway. While it’s a sprawling global company—Subway has among the most locations of any fast food chain worldwide—it got its start in Bridgeport, Connecticut, an enormous distance from Tūroa.
Which begs the question: will ski resorts stateside get their own fast food joints one day? I wouldn’t hold your breath.
But there is something tickling about the idea of emerging from the fog mid-run and spotting, near the base of your favorite lift, the looming visage of Colonel Sanders waiting to offer you a bucket of fried chicken.
