National Park Service Asking For Public Help Locating Missing 71-Year-Old Hiker
MOAB, Utah — The National Park Service has put out a request for the public’s help in locating Patrick J. Trier, a 71-year-old white male who was last seen in Salina, Utah, on Saturday, August 16th, 2026.
Trier may have been camping in Goblin Valley State Park or near Moab, Utah, before arriving at the Horseshoe Canyon trailhead of Canyonlands National Park on August 17th.
“Trier has long brown hair, a mustache, and has an atrophied right arm. He is approximately six feet tall and has a medium build. He was most likely wearing jeans and a blue hat and carrying a small black and gray backpack.”
Park rangers received notice of an overdue party on Saturday, August 22nd. Trier’s vehicle, a maroon 2004 Toyota RAV4, was located by NPS law enforcement at the Horseshoe trailhead on Sunday, August 23rd.
The NPS, Bureau of Land Management, and Wayne County Search and Rescue are carrying out aerial and ground searches today. The terrain in the area is rough, and temperatures have been in the high 90s during the day. The Horseshoe Canyon hike is considered strenuous, impacting search efforts.
