Mt. Hood Meadows Remains Closed as 60,000 Acre Grasshopper Fire Burns Nearby
The Grasshopper Fire has been burning near Mt. Hood, Oregon, since a lightning strike ignited the blaze on July 23, 2026.
The fire has grown to more than 60,000 acres as of Monday, August 10, and Level 3 evacuation orders remain in place at Mt. Hood Meadows, a popular ski resort, and surrounding areas.
Mt. Hood Meadows paused its summer operations on August 3 due to smoke, and has yet to reopen with the Level 3 evacuation order still in place.
Despite the doom and gloom of the massive fire burning within eyesight of Meadows’ lifts, the resort has remained optimistic and provided an encouraging update on social media yesterday, August 9:
“Things seem to be holding steady with the Grasshopper Fire. We are still at Level 3 evacuation, but the fire has NOT crossed Highway 35 and has continued to push more east and south,” writes Mt. Hood Meadows. “Smoke has seemed to be at its worst at night and in the morning, with the winds pushing it out by the afternoon.”

The Grasshopper Fire is 23% contained as of Monday morning. Crews from the Oregon Air National Guard, the Oregon Department of Forestry, and even volunteers from Australia are actively working to contain the fire.
Timberline Lodge, located on the south-western flank of Mt. Hood, closed temporarily for smoke last week but has since resumed normal summer operations.
