Austrian Areas To Start Opening For 26-27 Ski Seasons Next Month
Several Austrian glacier ski areas have announced target opening dates in September, despite current conditions leading to all but two summer ski areas being currently closed.
Sölden, which operates two glacier ski areas on its Tiefenbach and Rettenbach glaciers, has begun selling tickets for its early-autumn season from Friday 25 September, a month before it hosts the opening races of the 2026-27 Word Cup season. An adult day pass is currently €61.50
The Kaunertaler Gletscher is currently expected to open a day later, on 26 September 2026 and run a 7.5 month season through to 17 May 2027.
A third Austrian glacier, Pitztal, with the country’s highest lift-served slopes, is also scheduled to open for their 2026-27 ski season on Saturday, 26th September.
There are currently no areas open in Austria with Hintertux announcing its plan to switch from year-round operation to offering Austria’s longest season from September to July. It ended its 25-26 season just a few weeks ago. It is currently selling tickets at €82 for an adult day pass from 3rd October, but its unclear if it may open earlier.
The Stubai Glacier near Innsbruck says its autumn ski season for 2026 is projected to start in early to mid-October 2026 (tentatively around October 2nd or 3rd), depending on natural snow and weather conditions.
A sixth area, the Kitzsteinhorn glacier above Kaprun near Zell am See is believed to be planned to open for autumn 2026 ski operations on October 10, 2026, pending local weather and snow conditions. Carinthia’s Molltral Glacier hasn’t yet confirmed its plans but on the basis of past years is expected to target the same date or close to it.
