The Farmers' Almanac Predicts "Tricky" Winter 26/27 for New England and The East Coast

The Farmers’ Almanac’s Winter 26/27 forecast is officially here.

As per tradition, the Almanac has released a colorful map depicting forecasted weather trends across the continental United States. The trends are broad by design, but can offer some insight into how the upcoming winter could shake out.

For our friends in New England and the Mid-Atlantic, start preparing for what the Farmers’ Almanac is calling “one of the season’s most complicated winter patterns.”

This complicated pattern will be defined by coastal storms that will most likely produce rain and sleet along the coast, and heavy, wet snow inland and at higher elevations.

“Coastal communities could receive more rain or mixed precipitation, while inland areas may be hit by several rounds of heavy, wet snow—particularly during January and February,” writes the Farmers’ Almanac. “Small shifts in storm tracks and temperatures could make the difference between rain, sleet, freezing rain, and accumulating snow. Residents should be prepared for forecasts to change quickly as storms approach.”

For hardened New England skiers, the Farmers’ Almanac’s winter 26/27 predictions won’t seem out of the ordinary. While ski resorts in Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and New York experience cold and snowy blizzards regularly, they’re certainly no strangers to rain, sleet, and ice.

The Farmers’ Almanac is leaving the door open for multiple Nor’easters this winter as well: “A second storm path may guide weather systems along the Eastern Seaboard, bringing additional opportunities for rain, wintry mixes, and snow from the mid-Atlantic into New England.”

Despite the confidence in strong bands of moisture forming Nor’easters this winter, the Farmers’ Almanac reiterates that New England’s winter weather is “particularly unpredictable” this year, and that small changes in freezing levels could make or break storms in terms of snowfall.

Regardless of how this winter plays out, we know our rough-and-tumble friends from New England will be skiing between the months of November and April. They don’t call it “The Ice Coast” for nothing.
