Massive Rockfall Captured on Matterhorn Illustrates Increased Climbing Risk
A major rockfall occurred on an iconic Swiss peak, the Matterhorn, on August 5, 2026.
Clouds of dust could be seen rising from the massif as debris tumbled down the Italian side of the mountain, known as the Cervino. No injuries or fatalities were reported as a result of the event.
Although the Matterhorn has historically been a popular summer mountaineering destination, the heat wave that has impacted much of Europe this summer has changed that, too. Guides and mountain rescue teams in Zermatt have recently started warning climbers that it’s too dangerous right now due to an increased risk of rockfalls, even for experienced climbers with a guide.

In a typical year, temperatures on the Matterhorn sit below zero degrees Celsius, or the freezing point. However, a low-snow winter and persistent warm temperatures through July have caused snow and permafrost that usually remain on the mountain through the summer to melt, increasing the risk of rockfalls. Earlier this summer, precipitation on the Matterhorn fell as liquid above 4,500m (14,000+ ft) in elevation, where it would usually fall as snow.
The snowfield that climbers often follow up the mountain no longer exists, and the peak is exposed and rocky. Guide companies told a local news outlet last month that when inexperienced climbers use long ropes incorrectly, it can cause loose rocks to fall and endanger others on the mountain. On July 7, a hiker from the Czech Republic was killed in a rockfall on the Matterhorn.
Nearby, the Swiss ski resort, Zermatt Bergbahnen, also had to suspend its usual summer ski operations due to the heat wave’s impact on snow conditions on the glacier. The CEO stated that the mountain could not provide high-quality, safe skiing at the moment and that operations would be adapted to the circumstances.
