Breckenridge Ski Resort Revives Historic ‘Kingdom Of Breck’ Identity Ahead Of Winter 2026

Breckenridge Ski Resort is bringing back one of the town’s most unique historical identities with the launch of a nationwide campaign centered on “The Kingdom of Breck”. The initiative revives a nickname that dates back nearly 90 years while highlighting the mountain’s long history of innovation and its reputation as one of North America’s premier ski destinations.
According to the resort, the Kingdom of Breck story began in 1936 when a local women’s group discovered an 1880 United States map that completely omitted Breckenridge. Rather than treat the mistake as an error, the group declared the town its own sovereign territory. The area first became known as No Man’s Land before eventually evolving into The Kingdom of Breckenridge. Breckenridge is using the campaign to celebrate the community’s independent spirit and attract visitors looking for a high energy mountain experience.
Celebrating A Legacy Of Innovation
The resort described the identity as a mindset rooted in exploration and creativity that has shaped Breckenridge since its earliest days. Breckenridge Ski Resort opened on Peak 8 in 1961, founded by Trygve Berge, Sigurd Rockne, and Bill Rounds. Since then the resort has played a major role in the evolution of skiing and snowboarding.
Among its milestones, Breckenridge embraced snowboarding during the 1980s and hosted the first Snowboard World Cup. The resort also introduced the world’s first high speed detachable quad chairlift in 1981, installed North America’s first double loading six passenger chairlift, and expanded access to its famous high alpine terrain through the T Bar in 1984. In 2005 it opened the Imperial Express, which remains the highest chairlift in North America at 13000 feet.
New Experiences Planned For Winter
The Kingdom of Breck campaign will extend across television, digital platforms, social media, outdoor advertising, a documentary, and a new merchandise collection. Visitors can also expect several new experiences during the upcoming winter season.
The resort plans to expand live music offerings with the Après at the Overlook Music Series and surprise pop up performances throughout the mountain. Guests will also find playful additions including an Ullr Time Mega Shotski, shareable hot dog towers, and new celebrations honoring the resort’s founders.
Breckenridge also announced the installation of North America’s highest remote avalanche control system. Resort officials say the technology will help crews open the mountain’s signature high alpine terrain more efficiently when conditions allow.
Additional competitions, events, and winter experiences are expected to be announced before the 2026 and 2027 ski season begins. The campaign also coincides with Epic Pass sales, including a 20 percent discount on Epic and Epic Local Passes for eligible young adults.
