Winter 2027 Forecast: Warm West, Active South, and Increased Snow Risks for the Eastern U.S.

New long range forecast guidance from Direct Weather suggests the upcoming fall and winter seasons could feature a complex pattern with periods of colder temperatures and increased storm activity across parts of the United States. The forecast analysis examined three major climate models and compared their projections for the months ahead.
According to Direct Weather, a developing strong El Niño remains one of the biggest factors influencing the forecast. While El Niño winters can produce different outcomes depending on additional atmospheric patterns, the latest model guidance is showing several signals that could favor colder periods and increased snowfall potential.
Direct Weather noted that recent winters have featured strong cold patterns, and some of those trends may continue into the upcoming season.
Western United States Could Remain Warmer as Storm Track Shifts
Across the western United States, multiple models show a recurring pattern of warmer conditions, especially along the West Coast. Direct Weather explained that this setup is associated with a positive Pacific North American pattern, which can help encourage colder air to push into the central and eastern portions of the country.
The forecast suggests the Northwest, northern Rockies, and parts of the western states may experience periods of above normal temperatures, especially during parts of the fall and early winter. However, the same atmospheric pattern could help drive storm systems farther south and east.
For precipitation, the models show a wetter pattern developing across the Southwest during the winter months. This could bring increased moisture to areas that often benefit from El Niño driven storm tracks.
Southwest and Southern States Could See Increased Precipitation
One of the strongest areas of agreement between the climate models is the potential for an active southern storm track. Direct Weather highlighted that the CFS, CanSIPS, and European seasonal models all show wetter conditions across the Southwest and parts of the southern United States.
The forecast indicates that an El Niño influenced jet stream could repeatedly send storms through the southern tier of the country. If colder air moves into place during these storm systems, snowfall opportunities could increase across areas that typically see winter impacts from southern storms.
The southern United States may also experience cooler periods at times, particularly later in the winter as some models show stronger cold air intrusions.
Eastern United States Could See Major Winter Storm Potential
The biggest winter signal from the models appears across the eastern United States. Direct Weather noted that all three climate models show signs of an active storm track along the East Coast, with the potential for frequent nor’easter style systems.
The forecast suggests the eastern half of the country could see colder conditions develop later in the winter, especially during January, February, and possibly March. The CFS model in particular showed a potential shift toward significantly below normal temperatures in the East during February.
Direct Weather emphasized that a wetter storm pattern combined with colder air would create a favorable environment for snowfall events across parts of the region.
Long Range Winter Forecast Still Has Uncertainty
While the latest model guidance is showing promising signs for cold and snow lovers, Direct Weather stressed that the forecast remains months away from the start of winter and will continue to change as new data becomes available.
The European seasonal model was less aggressive with colder temperatures but still showed a similar precipitation pattern, adding confidence to the possibility of an active storm season.
With a strong El Niño developing and several atmospheric trends aligning, Direct Weather suggests the 2026-2027 winter could feature notable swings between warmer and colder periods, with the potential for a stronger second half of the season.
