Canadian Ski Area Teases "Big Things," but Details Are Scarce
Something’s happening at Cape Smokey, but we aren’t sure what yet.
The small ski area on the Atlantic Coast in Nova Scotia teased in a social media post that “Big things are coming to Smokey. Skiers and snowboarders have a lot to be excited about.”
The post added that more details are coming soon, and included a short video of a neat cut through the trees that, at first brush, looks like an ideal place to put some kind of ski lift. But Cape Smokey didn’t hint if that was what’s underway.

A past press release did suggest, though, that Cape Smokey has plans to increase its acreage.
“Currently offering over 150 acres of skiable terrain, the resort plans to expand to 642 acres as future phases are completed,” one passage from the release reads, which was published in November 2025.
The tease comes as Cape Smokey continues to evolve and grow after years of uncertainty.
According to a blurb published by the World Tourism Institute, Cape Smokey’s story began in the 1970s. Over the decades, the property, perched on a famed coastal highway called the Cabot Trail, was run by a mix of volunteers and owners, including the Nova Scotia Government.
Alongside periods of closure, eight different investors had considered buying Cape Smokey before pulling out. The blurb said the resort faced the risk of permanent closure. But in 2019, Cape Smokey Holding swooped in, led by CEO Martin Kejval, a former ski racer from the Czech Republic.
The new ownership opened a gondola in 2021 with plans to make Cape Smokey a year-round destination. Since then, the resort’s also unveiled new waterfront lodging.
The comeback story already makes Cape Smokey an interesting place. But the resort’s geographic location may be its most important calling card. Few mountains sit at the edge of the ocean, offering fresh snow and, if you’re lucky, the chance to spot a whale on the same day.
