This Tiny Rock Is Considered The Worst Island On Earth To Be Stranded On
When people imagine the world’s most dangerous islands, they often think of places filled with venomous snakes, active volcanoes, or hostile wildlife. But according to YouTuber Curiosity Dude, the most terrifying place to be stranded is much less dramatic. It’s a barren granite outcrop known as Rockall that offers almost no chance of long term survival.
Curiosity Dude’s newest video examined some of the world’s most unforgiving islands and ranks them based on how difficult they would be to survive on and how likely rescuers would be able to reach someone before it was too late.
Why Rockall Takes The Top Spot
Rockall sits alone in the stormy North Atlantic and is barely large enough to qualify as an island. The granite formation rises about 56 feet above sea level and provides only a small ledge where someone could remain above the waves.
Unlike many remote islands, Rockall offers virtually nothing that could help a stranded person survive. There is no fresh water, no vegetation, no soil, and almost no shelter from relentless wind and crashing waves. Rainwater may briefly collect in small cracks, but storing it would require equipment that a stranded person is unlikely to have. Even food would be difficult to obtain. Seabirds occasionally land on the rock, but there is no fuel or natural material available to build a fire or create shelter.
A Real Survival Attempt Shows The Challenge
Despite the barren and tiny landscape, adventurer Nick Hancock attempted to live on Rockall using extensive preparation back in 2014. Hancock arrived with stored drinking water, emergency food, solar panels, communications equipment, and a specially designed survival pod secured directly to the rock.
Even with those resources, severe storms nearly ended the mission, with powerful waves damaging equipment and sweeping supplies into the ocean. Hancock ultimately spent 45 days on Rockall before ending the expedition early. Based on his experience, surviving on Rockall without carefully planned support would certainly be near impossible.
Other Islands Present Different Threats
The ranking also includes several infamous destinations around the world. Brazil’s Snake Island is home to thousands of venomous golden lancehead snakes. New Zealand’s White Island presents the constant danger of sudden volcanic eruptions. North Sentinel Island remains off limits because of its isolated Indigenous inhabitants, while Antarctica’s Peter I Island and Norway’s Bouvet Island challenge even experienced expeditions with extreme isolation, glaciers, and severe weather.
Each location presents unique survival challenges. However Rockall stands apart because it provides almost nothing a person needs to stay alive. In the end, the smallest island on the list may also be the most unforgiving.
