Yellowstone National Park is opening applications for its 2026-2027 winter snowmobile permit lottery, giving visitors the chance to explore the park without a commercial guide during the upcoming snowy season.
The annual Non-Commercially Guided Snowmobile Access Program lottery begins August 1st and will accept applications through August 31st. Visitors selected through the process will be able to receive permits for independent snowmobile trips inside Yellowstone National Park during the 2026-2027 winter season.
The program allows permit holders to enter Yellowstone for trips lasting up to three days with groups of no more than five snowmobilers. The limited access opportunity is designed to provide independent winter recreation while maintaining rules that protect park resources and improve visitor safety.
Yellowstone Winter Snowmobile Permits Available Through Recreation.gov
Applications for the winter snowmobile lottery must be submitted through Recreation.gov during the August application period. Successful applicants will be notified in early September.
Any permits that are not claimed or are canceled later will become available on a first come first served basis beginning October 1st. Yellowstone officials said there is no waiting list for the program, and visitors should continue checking Recreation.gov throughout the winter because additional permits may become available due to cancellations.
The cost for a snowmobile permit is $40 per day, with an additional $6 application fee. Each approved trip is limited to a maximum of three days.
Requirements For Snowmobiling In Yellowstone National Park
Visitors selected for the program must meet several requirements before entering Yellowstone by snowmobile. Permit holders are considered non-commercial guides and must be at least 18 years old on the first day of their trip.
