Deputies Rescue Two Trespassers Trapped 60 Feet Inside an Abandoned Missile Silo In Colorado
An overnight patrol in Colorado led to a rescue operation after deputies discovered two people trapped inside an abandoned missile silo on a restricted property. The incident happened shortly after midnight on July 14th in unincorporated Arapahoe County and marked the second rescue at the same location in less than a week.
According to the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies spotted two vehicles parked near the gate of a restricted property while conducting patrols. As deputies checked the area, they heard voices coming from underground and discovered a 19-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman approximately 60 feet below the surface.
The man was able to climb out of the shaft using a rope ladder, but the woman could not make it back to the surface. Sable Altura Fire Rescue responded and safely removed her from the underground structure. Officials said neither person was injured during the rescue.
Confined Space Hazards Create Serious Risks
The rescue was the second emergency response at the location in one week, renewing concerns about the dangers of entering restricted properties and underground structures.
Authorities warned that underground locations, including abandoned facilities and former missile silo sites, can contain dangerous conditions that are not immediately obvious. Potential hazards include unstable surfaces, toxic gases, limited access points, and deep vertical shafts that can make escape extremely difficult.
Confined spaces can become life threatening in a matter of moments, especially when people enter without specialized training or safety equipment. Officials urged the public to avoid exploring restricted areas and to take posted warnings seriously.
Both individuals involved in the incident were issued summonses for second-degree criminal trespass.
