Colorado Ski Area Opens Lottery To Buy Historic Lift Chairs, but Not Everyone Can Win

Loveland Ski Area is giving the public a chance to own a piece of one of its most historic chairlifts.

Lift 5, which spanned a half-mile over Highway 6, linking Loveland Basin and Loveland Valley together, is being removed. The Heron Poma double chair was first installed in 1975, although the lift hasn’t operated since 2002. Shuttle buses have replaced the lift to transport skiers in more recent years, but the lift stayed standing until recently.

Loveland is now auctioning off 130 chairs from the lift through a lottery system. But there’s a catch: only 2026-27 Loveland season pass holders are eligible. Season passes must be paid off in full to be eligible for the lottery. Multiple pass holders from the same household can apply, but there can only be one winner per household.

Registration for the auction opened Wednesday, July 8, and goes until Wednesday, July 22. Winners will be notified on July 23 and have one week to purchase their chair before their entry is passed off. The cost of each chair is $650. Chairs also must be transported by the winner, and Loveland employees are not allowed to provide assistance with loading or transporting chairs.

Loveland Season passes are currently on sale for $639 for adults, $429 for young adults, $199 for children, and $209 for seniors.
