Rare EF1 Tornadoes Cause Damage In Vermont Mountain Towns
Woodstock, Vermont — Vermont has experienced extreme weather events in recent years. This includes heavy snowfall and flooding from severe rainstorms. Unfortunately, a part of Woodstock that’s seen a fair share of natural disasters saw another one last week.
On Thursday, severe weather moved through New England. The intensity of the storm peaked in Vermont, where two tornadoes were reported.
The most notable of the two occurred in West Woodstock. The EF1 tornado featured maximum wind speeds of 100 miles per hour. The tornado was 1.34 miles long, taking out or damaging many trees in the process. Multiple buildings were also damaged.
If you like going to Killington, you may recognize this stretch between Woodstock and Bridgewater. U.S.-4, which frequently straddles the Ottaquechee River, features various businesses and homes. Some of the businesses that were in the crosshairs included the Sleep Woodstock motel and Mountain Cremary. The motel saw damage to the roof. In 2023, other businesses near the Ottaquechee River saw damage from flooding.
A separate EF1 tornado was reported in Lincoln, which is situated near Sugarbush Resort. The damage there was less noticeable because it mostly passed through a forested area. Vermont also saw a tornado earlier this year, with one touching down in Williamstown back in April.
