North American Ski Resorts Open For Summer Solstice Weekend

Conditions at Banff Sunshine Village, open for summer skiing this weekend.

We’re a good few weeks into meteorological summer at this point, and astronomical summer starts this weekend with the summer solstice, but that doesn’t mean you can’t go skiing over the next few days. At least 5 ski resorts are offering skiing and snowboarding this weekend, some of which is hike access, some of which is full blown lift access.

North American Ski Resorts Open This Weekend

Copper Mountain, Colorado – Colorado’s Copper Mountain has closed its public chairlift operations for the summer, but skiers and snowboarders can still access terrain through the resort’s hike-park. The park runs Thursdays through Sundays for as long as conditions hold, with day tickets priced at $25. Those looking for lift-accessed laps can sign up for a Woodward Summer Camp session.

Timberline Lodge, Oregon – Oregon’s Timberline Lodge typically runs the longest ski season in the United States, with the Palmer Lift operating from 8:30am to 1:30pm daily. Both private training lanes and public lanes are available on the Palmer Snowfield, which generally stays open into August. Summers skiing brings a mix of racers, freestyle athletes, and recreational skiers looking to get turns in on summer snow.

Banff Sunshine Village, Alberta – Alberta’s Banff Sunshine Village is offering skiing and snowboarding from June 20th through July 5th, giving Canadian and American visitors 16 bonus days on the mountain. Terrain will be available off the Strawberry Express Standish Express chairlifts, though the full extent of open runs has not been announced.

Jay Peak Resort, Vermont – Jay Peak Resort in Vermont is hosting its annual Solstice Sessions event on Saturday, June 20th, offering on-snow skiing and snowboarding on a terrain park shaped from stockpiled snow near its Stateside Carpet area with sessions available in three-hour blocks starting at 9am for $100 per ticket. The event also includes skateboarding, a gear sale at the Stateside shop, food and drinks at the Stateside Cafeteria and Bullwheel Bar.

Beartooth Basin, Wyoming – Wyoming’s summer-only ski area is currently open every day, with plans to keep the two surface lifts spinning until June 24th at least. Lift tickets cost just $50 a day. Be advised, Beartooth Basin is for intermediate and advanced skiers and snowboarders. Conditions on the mountain are constantly changing and the terrain is steep.
