Vail Resorts Consulting With Bankers Regarding Activist Investor Buzz

Broomfield, Colorado — It turns out Vail Resorts doesn’t like a billionaire repeatedly asking it to sell Park City Mountain Resort.
Rohan Goswami of Semafor reports that Vail Resorts has been consulting with bankers who specialize in mergers and acquisitions. The goal is for the bankers to analyze the weaknesses that Vail Resorts is currently facing and could face in the future. There are reportedly various concerns Vail Resorts has had that led to this, including the climate and unions. But the chief concern appears to be Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince’s continued push to purchase Park City Mountain Resort.
Earlier this month, Prince spoke to Jason Blevins of The Colorado Sun. It’s a great read for those who want additional context or to know more about his ambitions for the ski resort. For Vail Resorts, what probably alarmed them was his statement that he’s spoken with investors about a takeover and that Vail should consider a franchise model for its mountains (i.e., someone else runs them). Prince has repeatedly stated that he doesn’t want to run Vail Resorts, but rather take over Park City Mountain Resort. Regarding the hostile investors, two names that have been floated are Dan Loeb of Third Point and Jon Litt of Land & Building, both of whom like to ski.
In case you were wondering, here was Prince’s response to Goswami’s reporting:
Vail Resorts’ CEO has rebuffed each one of Prince’s advances, including statements to The Colorado Sun and Semafor.
“I’m not necessarily a fan of the asset light model, at least not for our company and in terms of where we’re trying to go,” said Katz to Semafor last month.
The news is the latest indication that this may be the most tumultuous period in Vail Resorts’ history. A rough winter, ongoing chatter about Park City Mountain Resort, and now this make for a challenging road ahead for the company.
