Pregnant Hiker, Partner, and Three Dogs Rescued in Florida After Heat Emergency

Florida hikers rescued from extreme heat.

A pregnant woman, her partner, and their three dogs were rescued from deep within the Juniper Prairie Wilderness last Friday after the couple began showing signs of heat exhaustion on the Florida National Scenic Trail, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

The call for help came in around 3:15pm. The couple told dispatchers they had underestimated the heat, were running low on water, and were more than an hour from the trailhead on foot. The woman was approximately 25 weeks pregnant.

MCSO’s Aviation Unit responded alongside deputies, Marion County Fire Rescue, and the US Forest Service. The Air-1 helicopter helped guide rescue crews through the remote terrain and quickly pinpointed the group’s location.

Ground crews reached the hikers and provided water and medical care. The pregnant woman received an IV drip for dehydration before the couple and their dogs were safely evacuated from the wilderness area.

Florida’s heat can become life-threatening faster than many hikers anticipate, particularly on remote trails with limited access to emergency services. Authorities are reminding outdoor enthusiasts to bring more water than they think they will need, avoid peak afternoon heat when possible, know their route and estimated travel time, and watch for signs of heat exhaustion in both people and pets.

No serious injuries were reported. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office credited the safe outcome to coordinated teamwork across multiple agencies.
