Manmade "Glacier" Is Over 15 Feet Deep at Boyne, but Some Skiers Aren't Happy

Did you read the title of this article and think: ‘Wait, there are no glaciers in Michigan?!’

If so, you’re correct. However, that isn’t stopping a Michigan ski area from claiming that its glacier is still firing and that its lifts are still spinning, despite it being nearly May.

Way up north, Boyne Mountain is still open, thanks to what they call the Victor Glacier.

As mentioned before, the Victor Glacier isn’t actually a glacier, but a 15+ foot-deep pile of mostly man-made snow that Boyne has kept stacked all winter and into the spring to extend their season.

The ski area will open on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m.- 1 p.m. with just the Victor Glacier terrain as long as conditions allow. See below. Keep reading for more.

Boyne Mountain

Boyne gets about 140 inches of snow annually, and has seen roughly 103″ over this season. The resort also has snowmaking technology that covers 90% of the mountain.

However, as one commenter on the resort’s post about the glacier’s depth pointed out, being open into May means blowing snow guns all winter long. Anyone who’s skied through the cloud of a snow gun knows it’s not the most pleasant experience, and imaginably less so in the frigid winters of northern Michigan.

So, is it really worth snowmaking all winter long just for a few bonus weekends? Vote in the poll at the bottom of the article to weigh in.

In contrast, Mount Bohemia, which sits even further north in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, doesn’t use any snowmaking technology and receives an annual snowfall of 273″. This year, La Niña was kinder to Mount Boho than many other places, dropping roughly 360″ of snow on the resort.

As a result, Boho is planning to spin lifts every weekend until May 10.
