The BRITS in Austria This Week

The BRITS in Austria This Week

We’re in the Austrian resort to see some of the best up-and-coming freestyle talent Great Britain has to offer.

The BRITS have been a proving ground for so many of the UK’s great skiers and snowboarders.

Winter Olympians and World Cup winners, among them James Woods, Billy Morgan, Mia Brookes.

And Kirsty Muir, who has just picked up not one but two Crystal Globes, in Ski Slopestyle and Overall Freeski Park & Pipe, as the 2025-26 season’s top-ranked athlete.

Back in 2018, when the Championships were held in the Swiss resort of Laax, we featured Kirsty and Mia as two youngsters to watch.

And last year, we had our eye on a few more prospects, among them the then 10-year-old snowboarder, Riley Sharpe.

Remember the name.

So what’s in store this week?

The on-snow action takes place from 30 March to 3 April at the world-famous PenkenPark in Mayrhofen, a nominee for the World’s Best Freestyle Resort.

It is presented by Ellis Brigham and The Snowboard Asylum.

“The British Snowboard & Freeski Championships 2026 is set to be the most momentous Championships in the event’s long history, with a raft of enhancements aimed at advancing the existing pool of talented athletes and, of equal importance, encouraging and catering for new novice participants,” the organisers say.

NEW FOR 2026

This year, for the first time, there’s a new ‘Futures Project‘ for the youngest age category.

The Under 12s will compete separately from the rest of the competitors across multiple disciplines in a single day.

The idea is to focus on those entering the sport.

They have also been given the chance to attend a coaching programme run by Snowsports Scotland & England.

There’s a brand new Streetstyle Championships, debuting the newly recognised Rail/Jib discipline.

Both the British Big Air and the Streetstyle Championships are being recognised as International Ski & Snowboard Federation (FIS) events.

It means they’ll carry world ranking points for those who have a FIS licence.

There’ll be live scoring for all British Championship disciplines.

The event is affiliated with the Altitude Comedy Festival,  which was founded in 2007 by Marcus Brigstocke and Andrew Maxwell and, in 2026, takes place at the same time as The BRITS.

Dubbed ‘the funniest show on snow’, PlanetSKI has attended the Festival in the past and we’ll be there for the first time in several years to enjoy just a few of the many comedy shows and other fun and games on the Festival programme this week.
