Sun, Snow & Deals Aligns For Awesome April In The Alps
It’s looking like April 2026 is going to be unusually good in the Alps, with the mountains of Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland switching back to full-on winter mode for the final week of March.
Up to a metre of snowfall has fallen in the past few days, just a week ahead of the Easter weekend. Things were already looking good in the western Alps with snow lying up to 4m deep on high ground, nearly 50% above the long-term average for this time of year. Verbier, which has had around 50cm of snowfall so far, is pictured top.

Of course, the snowfall won’t last forever and spring sunshine will soon be back, perfect for long afternoons on a mountain terrace soaking up the rays, but the current refresh is a real bonus.
“There’s no need to even ski, though most of our guests will do. For those who don’t, ski resorts have heated swimming pools, spas, sports centres, and activities from sledging to zip-lines, and snowshoeing to mountain biking on snow, or whiling away the day on a sunny mountain terrace,” says catered-French-chalet holiday specialists Ski Beat’s Laura Hazell, who adds, “In April, the weather is kinder, with many ski resorts bathed in spring sunshine, the atmosphere is relaxed, daylight hours are longer, and prices are the keenest they have been all season, and for value, convenience and a chance to relax in the spring sunshine, April in the Alps is the surprising frontrunner this season.”
Chris Thompson, director of high-end chalet rental specialist OVO Network, agrees,
“The Alps have had a fabulous season this year. The snowfall has been exceptional and that means that if you can get away for some spring skiing you’re in for a treat. Longer days, quieter slopes and deep snow mean there’s plenty to get excited about in resort, plus April offers great value for money with cheaper prices for both accommodation and travel. If you like to squeeze in a last ski of the season this is one year not to miss.”
Besides the snowfall and good weather there are lots of other bonuses to April skiing including quieter slopes and lower prices for many things including two of the big ones: lift passes and accommodation.
“April often brings that ideal mix of quieter slopes, milder days and good value so with the conditions as they are, skiers are in for a real treat. We’re offering up to 15% off selected April stays in resorts including Tignes, Montgenèvre, La Rosière and Peisey-Vallandry (ski Les Arcs and Paradiski),” confirms Nicola Moss of Peak Retreats.
April also normally delivers easier travel – usually quieter airports and roads with weather delays less likely and you can even travel a bit lighter.
“With warmer weather, you won’t need heavy layers. You’ll still need to layer up with a base, midlayer, and outerwear, but these can be much lighter and breathable than what you’d typically pack for winter skiing. For example, swapping a hardshell for a softshell,” says Ian McIlrath, Managing Director at Ski Solutions, who adds, “In some resorts, where temperatures run especially high, it’s not unusual to see skiers taking a break to sunbathe on the slopes. Just remember, when skiing, it’s crucial to protect your skin from UV rays, especially as they become stronger throughout spring.”

Family Fun
The Easter Holidays are a particularly good time for a relaxed family ski holiday. Easier travel, lighter packing, lower prices and sunshine all help make spring skiing less expensive and less stressful for families.
“The last week of Easter is proving popular with families on a budget, with lower prices and quieter slopes to enjoy the spring skiing sunshine. Our top sellers right now are all-inclusive ski holidays, with clients raving about being able to leave their wallet behind and just relax. I really relate to that, with two teenage boys who want to eat and drink all day when they’re active!” says Richard Sinclair of ski holiday specialists sno.co.uk
