US/Israel War with Iran Impacts Skiing
The Asian and Middle East market is growing in importance for many ski resorts.
“Around 1,000 Israelis have cancelled their holiday in Val Thorens due to the war,” said the head of the Val Thorens tourist office, Vincent Lallane, to PlanetSKI this week.
“Many people from Asia also use airports like Dubai as a hub airport and they have cancelled as they cannot fly or are unwilling to do so.”
This not only affect the resorts themselves with hotel bookings cancelled and lift tickets not bought, but the service providers too.
Due to the ongoing war in Iran the digital ski instructor platform, Maison Sport, said its instructors have have received cancellations from Middle Eastern clients.
With fewer high-spending clients from the region able to travel to the mountains, bookings in premium resorts such as Courchevel, Val d’Isère and Megève are likely to be the most affected.
It has offered this advice to its instructors:
“Please note that if you receive cancellations from Middle Eastern clients, our usual cancellation policy applies.
“It is at your discretion whether you decide to refund the customer.
“In response, we strongly recommend reviewing and adjusting your pricing where appropriate in order to remain competitive and secure bookings for the remainder of the season.”

Ski resorts use huge amounts of energy and with oil prices spiraling part of this increase will be passed on to the consumer.
Without doubt.
Not directly this year as many costs are fixed for skiers and snowboarders, but it will affect how prices are set for next winter if there are significant additional costs.
Ski holiday bookings are also affected by the general economic situation and they are impacted when people are tightening their belts due to economic reality and concerns for the future.
“It is fortunate that all this is happening at the end of the ski season rather than the beginning, but it shows how sensitive ski resorts are to global events, and of course we have no idea how the continuing war may affect next season,” said the PlanetSKI editor, James Cove.
