Mikaela Shiffrin Wins Slalom Again, Overall World Cup Title in Reach

At this point, is anyone surprised?

During her tenth slalom race of the World Cup season at the finals in Lillehammer, Norway, Mikaela Shiffrin blazed into first place, locking down her 110th career win on Tuesday.

To take victory, she beat out Switzerland’s Wendy Holdener and Germany’s Emma Aicher.

For Shiffrin, it marked the end of a near-perfect slalom season, where she won nine of the ten World Cup slalom races she competed in.

While Shiffrin had already secured the season-long slalom crystal globe—the award given to discipline and overall winners—she was presented with it in Norway.

Shiffrin’s also poised to claim the overall Crystal Globe on the strength of her slalom performances. While overall titles skew towards those who excel across three or four disciplines—Shiffrin’s now a specialist in the tech events—she’s done so well in slalom that her lack of downhill or super-G wins may not matter.

The upcoming giant slalom will decide Shiffrin’s fate. On the overall leaderboard, Aicher trails Shiffrin by 85 points. For Shiffrin to become the overall champion for the sixth time, she needs to place in the top 15 in Wednesday’s giant slalom, the last race of the women’s season.

“It’s been a really exciting battle—weird to say ‘battle’ with somebody who I consider a friend, but, yeah, these last races have been super exciting,” Shiffrin said, describing her narrow lead over Aicher, according to The Athletic.

The push for the overall Crystal Globe follows something of an Olympic comeback story for Shiffrin. At the 2022 Games, in Beijing, she didn’t medal once. So, as the 2026 Winter Olympics dawned earlier this year, scrutiny surrounded Shiffrin’s ability to perform on the world’s biggest stage.

Well, she did, notching the fastest Olympic slalom time of the day, adding another gold to her trophy case, which already included three Olympic medals.

While the spotlight, as it often is, is trained on Shiffrin going into Wednesday, she tipped her ski helmet to Aicher after her latest victory. The 22-year-old German is a rising star, showing strength across the speed and tech events.

“There’s a new era of the greatest overall skier, and I am so excited to see what she does in the future,” Shiffrin said of Aicher, per FIS.
