The Sun Valley Stampede Is Here! Course Preview and Conditions Report

Good morning, skiers! The Sun Valley Stampede presented by POWDER is here!

The best skiers from across the West are flocking to the iconic ski town to test their mettle on a never-before-seen course that will feature a GS section, a big jump, a moguls/ungroomed section, a skier-cross section, and finally, multiple freestyle features.

The event has multiple competition groups and is open to the public. Age/competition groups include: 12 & Under, 13-17, 18-40, and 41+. A select roster of pro skiers, which includes Marcus Caston, Madison Rose Ostergren, Jim Ryan, Ridge Dirksmeier, and more, will compete during the Finals on Sunday, March 15, 2026.

POWDER writer Ian Greenwood and I checked out the course yesterday, and while much of it was still under construction, we are stoked for today and tomorrow’s competition.

We’re expecting the spectator experience to be electric, and for the skiers to charge hard! What more can you ask for? Click here for the Event Schedule.

Take a look at a few images and videos of the course below. Check back in with us throughout the weekend for updates, photos, and videos from the Sun Valley Stampede.

Above the skier-cross course is the Moguls & Natural section on Sun Valley’s ‘Race Arena’ trail. Skiers will launch off the ‘Race Arena Jump’, shown in the map and photo below.

Yesterday’s temperatures were balmy, and the entire mountain, including the course, was quite soft by 2 p.m. when Ian and I got out.

Saturday is expected to be slightly cooler with temps reaching 40 at the Warm Springs Base. We’re hoping it’s enough to soften conditions and make for a great race. Sunday, however, is expected to be cold and windy. Stay tuned. We’ll have live reports throughout the race, but it could be quite firm! Expect drama as skiers battle the dynamic, ever-changing spring conditions.

Follow us on Instagram @powdermagazine for live coverage throughout both days as well. See below for a preview from judge and local pro/legend McKenna Peterson.
