UK operators report that Easter bookings are busy at the moment with resorts also reporting growing interest and bookings.

This increased interest in Easter is reflected in a significant increase in online search traffic according to Google, which reports a rise of a double digit increase across Easter ski holiday searches.

This year Easter Sunday is April 5th – last year it was two weeks later on April 20th.

The second half of February saw snow across the Alps and some very significant falls in places.

We reported on the snow at the time on PlanetSKI:

Images across social media sparked interest.

There has also been a trend in recent years for people to look at skiing at the end of the season following several poor Xmas and New Year holiday periods.

“Easter has grown in popularity every year since we returned to ski holidays after covid, with an 83% increase in enquiries since 2021 and a doubling of search traffic,” said Richard Sinclair from the UK ski agent, SNO.

The last five years have seen good spring snow conditions in parts of the Alps.

“Easter is early this year and is benefiting from a triple whammy of a February with very big snowfall, the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics in Italy and the early school holiday dates,” added Richard.

“It is lining up to be one of the best ends to a ski season in recent years,” he added.

The Winter Olympics last month saw favourable weather with stunning and inspiring mountain backdrops in the Dolomites.

This too has played a part.

BBC Sport saw its largest overall Winter Olympics audience.

There were a record 83m streams and more than 44m streamed hours across BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport website and app.

A total of 26.3m viewers tuned in on TV.

Social coverage generated 235m views.

“Televised coverage of heavy snowfall and world-class alpine conditions has helped counter lingering concerns about climate change impacting ski seasons,” said the Managing Director  of VIP SKI, Andy Sturt.

“With one of the strongest snow bases in recent years, resorts at altitude are expected to offer excellent conditions through to the end of April.”

VIP SKI is seeing particularly strong demand for Easter departures, alongside increased interest in late-season spring skiing, traditionally favoured by experienced skiers seeking quieter slopes and long blue-sky days

Richard Sinclair from SNO makes other points:

  • The biggest change we’ve seen at SNO is families book-ending the winter by skiing both Christmas and Easter. For many of our families, ski holidays are more important than fly-and-flop beach trips in the summer.
  • With the early Easter date and the big snowfall,  skiers on a budget don’t need to book in the highest and more expensive resorts as there are likely to be good conditions lower down.

Here at PlanetSKI we have always been big fans of late skiing season and have been advocating that people give it a go for many years:

Late season there are:

  • Quieter slopes
  • Shorter lift queues
  • Longer daylight hours
  • Milder & sunnier weather
  • Better-value prices
  • A more chilled out vibe
  • Generally great snow

Resorts like Verbier are pulling out the stops for late-season skiing with a range of activities on offer.

Other resorts are also making special efforts:

This weekend PlanetSKI is heading out to the Alps and we’ll be reporting from a wide range of resorts to see what is on offer.

Some are obvious choices, others less so, but we have made our selections carefully and will be reporting back:

  • Tignes and Val d’Isere (France)
  • Villars (Switzerland)
  • Morzine (France)
  • Les Gets (France)
  • Les Menuires (France)
  • Val Thorens (France)
  • Verbier (Switzerland)
  • Crans-Montana (Switzerland)

And for those wondering about the low resorts of Les Gets and Morzine, the area has had a great winter.

“It is the best winter I can remember and I have been coming here for many, many years,” said one PlanetSKI reader, Campbell, in February.

He took to his skins for a spot of touring in the back country.

We shall see if it holds out to mid-March and beyond.

It looks like being an excellent ski touring season in the Alps with touring going on into May.

If it is spring sunshine you are after then take a look at this report we have just posted from Inghams Ski:

If you haven’t sampled the joys of late-season skiing then this is perhaps the year to give it a go.

Ee, make that definitely the year to give it a go.
