Sun Valley Ski Resort Expands With 90 Acres of Newly Gladed Terrain

Come next winter, 90 acres of new, gladed terrain will be available to skiers at Sun Valley, Idaho.

Located beneath the Roundhouse Express Gondola, the four new runs span between the preexisting Canyon, Exhibition, and Olympic trails.

Bear Den, a black diamond, cuts through the trees between Olympic and Olympic Lane. Below Bear Den is the new intermediate gladed run, Sheep Camp. The new advanced Tim’s and Pioneer Bowl trails wind through the trees straddling Exhibition.

The debuting trails join the more than 350 acres of gladed terrain added to Sun Valley’s footprint over the past five years.

The resort, historically, has been best known for its long and cruisy groomed runs. But the new glades, similar to those found in the previously unveiled Sunrise area, add something more for the advanced crowd to chew on.

The latest glading project was created through the Bald Mountain Forest Stewardship Project, a collaboration between Sun Valley, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and the National Forest Foundation.

The ski resort, in a press release, said the project reduces fire risk, improves forest health, and provides heating firewood to local indigenous communities, including the Shoshone Bannock at Fort Hall and the Shoshone Paiute in Duck Valley.

Sun Valley added that the new terrain will be “some of the most exciting advanced terrain on the mountain.”

It won’t be the only new addition for Sun Valley next winter, during which the ski resort is celebrating its 90th anniversary.

Less headline-grabbing but nonetheless convenient is the addition of RFID tech across all of Sun Valley’s base areas of Bald Mountain and Dollar Mountain. At Dollar Mountain—a separate area with mostly beginner and intermediate terrain—Sunny’s Adventure Park is opening with freestyle features aimed at kids and adults.

Sun Valley is scheduled to open on November 27. In the meantime, the ski resort is hosting its annual Pray for Snow Party at River Run Lodge on Saturday, November 15, which includes a dance party, a raffle, and a food drive.
