IOC Reiterates Support for ‘Olympic Truce’
The International Olympic Committee has reiterated its support for the Olympic Truce.
It does not say whether the strikes on Iran breach the agreement.
“As a global organisation, the IOC has to navigate a complex reality,” said the IOC in a statement.
“At every edition of the Olympic Games, the IOC has to deal with the consequences of the current political context and the latest developments in the world.
“At the same time, it must live up to its mission to preserve a values-based, truly global sporting platform that can give hope to the world.
“This objective depends on the ability of the IOC to bring athletes together to take part in peaceful competition, no matter where they come from.”

The United Nations resolution entitled ‘Building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal’ (commonly referred to as the Olympic Truce Resolution) supports the IOC in this objective.
It aims to enable safe passage for all qualified athletes, from all corners of the world, as they travel to the host country.
The Olympic Truce Resolution is an aspirational and non-binding resolution which the UN Member States agree on for each edition of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
It is tabled by the host nation of the Games and is adopted by the UN Member States themselves.
The IOC, with its Permanent Observer Status at the UN, has no means of enforcing the implementation of the resolution.
The United Nations has condemned the strikes carried out by the USA and Israel against Iran.
It has described them as a serious violation of international law.
The USA has defended its actions at the UN Security Council, stating that the strikes were intended to prevent Iran from threatening global security through nuclear weapons.
The Opening Ceremony of the Winter Paralympics takes place in Verona on Friday.
Menna Fitzpatrick and Scott Meenagh will be Great Britain’s flagbearers at the opening ceremony.
Neither will not be at the ceremony at the Verona Arena, a Roman amphitheatre in the historic centre of the city, as they are competing the following day.
But they will take part via a video sequence, along with fellow ParalympicsGB teammates, to be shown as part of the parade.
Welsh Para-Alpine skier Fitzpatrick, who is visually-impaired, is Britain’s most decorated Winter Paralympian with six medals.
The 27-year-old will take part in the Paralympics almost three months after sustaining a significant knee injury and just over a year after breaking her leg.
“I’m super excited, I still can’t believe I’ve made it to Cortina and so this is an extra cherry on top,” she said.
Scottish Para-Nordic skier Meenagh is set to compete in his third Paralympics after appearances at the 2018 and 2022 Games.
The 36-year-old lost both legs in 2011 while serving with the Parachute Regiment in Afghanistan.
He became the first Briton to win a medal at the World Para Nordic Skiing Championships when he claimed silver in the 12.5km individual biathlon in 2023.
“It’s remarkable. I try really hard every day to represent my sport, myself and my country in the best way I can,” he said.
“I try to do that in my behaviour and express that in my performance, so now to have that little bit of recognition – I’m a bit speechless.”
The Games take place through to Sunday March 15th.
It is the 50th anniversary of the first Winter Paralympics.
