Utah Skier Dies From Injuries Sustained In Avalanche
The Utah Avalanche Center (UAC) has confirmed that a skier has died from injuries sustained in an avalanche in Butler Basin on Saturday, February 21, 2026.
Two skiers were involved in the incident, according to the UAC. One skier suffered a leg injury, and another, the fatality announced today, was airlifted from the scene in critical condition.
UAC confirmed today, February 27, that the skier had passed away in the hospital from their injuries.
The avalanche occurred at 9,300 ft. on a north-facing aspect, according to the UAC’s accident report. The problem type was a persistent weak layer, and the avalanche type was a soft slab. The slide was approximately 250 feet wide, two feet deep, and ran for 100 vertical feet. It occurred on a 38° slope, according to UAC.
The accident marks at least the 20th avalanche death nationwide this season, and the fourth in Utah over the last ten days.
Avalanche danger is forecasted to be Level 3- CONSIDERATE across most of the state today, according to the UAC’s daily forecast.
