Swiss Government Announces Payout To Victims Of Crans-Montana Fire

Crans-Montana, Switzerland The fallout from the devastating Crans-Montana fire continues, as the Swiss government will take financial action to help the affected survivors and the deceased victims’ families.

Reuters reports that the Swiss government is offering 50,000 Swiss francs (around $65,000 USD) to injured patrons and families who lost someone in the fire. This payout will cost the country 7.8 million Swiss francs. A foundation will also be created with the financial backing of 10 million Swiss francs. The foundation’s goal is to help those affected. These moves are meant as a gesture of goodwill.

“The Federal Council shares with the victims and their families the desire for truth and justice,” said Swiss President Guy Parmelin. “We too want to know what happened, why, and how it could have been prevented.”

The government will use up to 20 million Swiss francs to cover out-of-court settlements, as lawsuits regarding the fire are expected.  8.5 million Swiss francs will be distributed to the cantons (basically the Swiss version of states) that have been impacted by the fire.

The Fire & Aftermath

In the early hours of January 1st, a fire started when sparklers attached to champagne bottles were situated too close to the ceiling. The soundproof acoustic foaming that existed on the ceiling accelerated the fire, leading to a mass casualty event. Ultimately, 41 people died, and 115 people were injured.

Since the fire, an investigation has been underway to determine who was at fault. It became apparent that no recent inspections had taken place, despite the owner’s insistence that it was up to code. Investigations have also shown that the canton’s fire inspection was insufficient. One of the bar owners was detained but released on bail. However, the bar owners have not yet been charged.

A memorial was created to remember the victims. However, it too caught fire, damaging some of the tributes.
