Despite Warm Season, Mammoth Has Enough Snow To Stay Open Through Memorial Day

That’s right, California’s Mammoth Mountain will stay open for skiing and riding through at least Memorial Day 2026, according to a press release obtained by POWDER on February 26, 2026.

Historically, Mammoth Mountain has stayed open through late May and sometimes even into June during big snow years. The ski area, which has a summit of 11,053 ft., tends to hang onto snow better than other ski areas due to colder temperatures.

While Mammoth sees an average of 400″ of snow per year, it doesn’t take much to keep lifts spinning late into the season.

Many ski areas in California and the West have experienced low snow this winter.

Mammoth’s season started slightly above average, albeit late, receiving 16″ in November, in contrast to last October’s 3″. Precipitation stayed light through November, but picked back up in December and January, where the mountain got 73″ and 43″ respectively.

In February of 2026, Mammoth recorded more than seven feet of snowfall (87″), bringing their season-to-date total to 243″.

The resort is technically below average for this time of year, but they don’t seem to mind, considering today’s announcement that skiing will last through Memorial Day. Only at Mammoth Mountain.

Over the 2024/25 season, Mammoth Mountain got 286″ of snow in total, which put them a bit behind previous years.

In contrast, the 2023/24 season saw 367″, and 2022/23 was the snowiest season to date, with 715″ of snowfall. Last season, despite only getting 286″ of snow, Mammoth Mountain stayed open for skiing until June 15.

For what Mammoth calls their ‘Second Season,’ the Canyon and Eagle lodges will close on April 19, 2026, and all lift access will move to the Main Lodge. Conditions dependent, operating hours will shift to 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in late April or early May to take advantage of morning sunshine before the snow gets too sticky.

Mammoth will continue to update guests on specific dates and resort operations.
