Boston-Area Ski Hill Buried By 24 Inches of Snow, Most In Last 24 Hours Nationwide

According to popular snow tracking and ski forecasting app OpenSnow, Blue Hills Ski Area, located just 16 miles outside of Boston, is the snowiest ski area nationwide over the last 24 hours.

The ski area is reporting that 24 inches (two feet) of snow fell yesterday, February 23, in a blizzard that slammed the East Coast from Virginia and Delaware to Maine.

The next closest ski resort in terms of 24-hour snowfall totals is Timberline Lodge at 17 inches, which is located high on Oregon’s Mt. Hood. The humble Blue Hills bested it, however.

“Great news! We are OPEN tomorrow, February 24th, 1-9 pm for skiing and riding,” writes Blue Hills. “24 inches of fresh. Ski + ride with us!”

To put Blue Hills’s impressive 24-hour storm total into perspective, let’s take a look at how much snow the ski area typically records throughout an entire season.

While Blue Hills Ski Area doesn’t report annual snowfall totals, the Blue Hills Observatory and Science Center located at the summit of the mountain does.

According to a 2021 blog post, the Blue Hills Observatory receives about 45 inches of snow annually. With that in mind, the ski area recorded more than half of its average snowfall for an entire year in just one 24-hour period.

Blue Hills Observatory also noted that they broke the daily snowfall record for February 23rd, which had previously been set in 1967.

The observatory has seen 34.9″ of snow in February of 2026 and 77.7″ throughout Winter 25/26. That’s 19.7″ and 28.8″ above normal, respectively. Translation: it’s been a snowy winter for Blue Hills and the greater Boston area.

From Jay Peak, Vermont, leading the continent in total snowfall, to Blue Hills coming out on top today, it’s been a memorable season for skiers on the East Coast.

More snowy weather and cold temperatures are expected in the coming weeks. Wax up those powder boards, wear an extra layer, and go have some fun!

I’m writing this from Lake Tahoe, where it’s currently pouring rain, if that gives you any more incentive…
