Nine Skiers Missing After Avalanche in USA

The avalanche happened in the Castle Peak area near the town of Truckee.

Rescue crews on skis and snowcats battled blizzard conditions to rescue six others that survived.

The group was made up of 11 clients and four guides.

Weather conditions are dangerous with a significant chance of more avalanches.

There is a Level 4 (High) avalanche risk in the area.

There has been around 70cm of snow in the past 24 hours with strong winds

Rescue teams have been deployed from two nearby ski resorts.

Rescuers from Boreal Mountain Ski Resort and the Alder Creek Adventure Center are involved.

The skiers were on the last day of a three-day backcountry skiing trip.

They spent two nights at huts on a trip that involved navigating “rugged mountainous terrain” for 4 miles (6.4km) while carrying food and supplies.

“Rescue efforts remain in progress now with 46 emergency first responders. Weather conditions remain highly dangerous,” the statement continued.

The Sierra Avalanche Center said, “Large avalanches are expected to occur into at least early Wednesday morning across backcountry terrain.”
