Avalanche Pulls Skier Over Cliff In Verbier

Avalanche in Verbier.

Many parts of the Alps, including around Verbier, have seen some huge snowfall totals over the past week. As such the avalanche danger in many areas is high or extreme, forcing resorts to highly recommend sticking to open trails and following signs.

European resorts often allow skiers and snowboarders to ride off-piste at their own risk. Verbier is strongly discouraging off-trail skiing, but people still pop in between runs believing that they’re safer than they really are. This avalanche was filmed around 10:30am on February 13th on the south facing slope under the James Blunt lift.

Despite the avalanche pulling a person over the cliff, they weren’t buried or harmed, a seriously lucky result in what could have been a very deadly situation. If a resort recommends staying on-piste during high avalanche danger, you should probably stay on piste.
