Franjo Von Allmen’s Historic Three Golds
24-year old Franjo von Allmen has become the first man to win three gold medals in Olympic Alpine Skiing competitions since the legendary French racer Jean-Claude Killy at the 1968 Grenoble games.
The Swiss racer topped the results table in the Super G, Downhill and, along with slalom racer Tanguy Nef, the Team Combined.
“It’s crazy. I would have been happy with one gold medal,” von Allmen said, looking more surprised at his achievement than anybody, and adding, “You could say it was a perfect Olympic Games. I think maybe after a few days it will be even more special, and I can really understand what is going on.”
The only other male racer to achieve the three-golds-at-one Olympics feat was Austrian racer Toni Sailer who did so aged even younger than von Allmen, aged just 20, at the 1956 Cortina Olympics 70 years ago.
The most recently three-time gold winner at one Olympics was female Croatian racer Janica Kostelić also won three at the 2002 Salt Lake Games.
