Underrated Alberta Ski Resort Opens New Chairlift & Terrain Expansion

Alberta — Yesterday was a historic day for one of the up-and-coming ski resorts in North America.
Yesterday, Castle Mountain Resort opened up the Stagecoach Express chairlift for the first time. Previously only accessible to cat skiing guests, this new terrain pod is now serviced by a detachable high-speed quad chairlift. The opening was marked by a ceremonial ribbon-cutting.
“The introduction of our first high-speed lift is a major milestone for Castle and a meaningful step forward for the resort,” said Cole Fawcett, Sales & Marketing Manager at Castle. “This expansion opens up some incredible new terrain, dramatically improving the amount of skiable acreage and the diversity of trails, and allows more guests to experience more of what makes this place so special. As we mark 60 years at Castle Mountain Resort, this investment reflects both how far we’ve come and our commitment to the future of the mountain.”
The Stagecoach expansion is kind of a big deal for Castle. Long regarded as an under-the-radar ski resort in Alberta, its brough international attention to the mountain.
The expansion adds 22 new runs to Castle, which are of the beginning, intermediate, and advanced variety.
The chairlift isn’t new, as it originally came from Banff Sunshine Village. However, after it was decommissioned in 2024, it underwent an extensive refurbishment before being installed in 2025. It’s Castle’s first high-speed chairlift, operating at twice the speed of its other fixed-grip lifts. The lift has a length of 1,423 meters (4,668.6 feet), a vertical rise of 558 meters (1,830.7 feet), and a speed of up to 5 meters (16.4 feet) per second. It has a ride time of around six minutes.
With these additions, Castle Mountain now features more than 115 trails, a growth of around 25% compared to last winter. As noted in the press release and other recent Castle news, the ski resort’s next focus is to become a four-season destination and to modernize the rest of the lift network.
