The Incredible Technology Behind Modern Snow Grooming
If you’ve noticed some pretty incredible improvements to your favorite ski resort’s grooming over the past several years, there’s a decent chance it’s due to an incredible LiDAR technology called SnowSat. The Mammoth Mountain social media team took a ride with snow groomer Bernie Rosow to discuss this incredible tech.
Essentially SnowSat provides an incredibly accurate readout on the snow depth around the cat, allowing the groomer to move snow around based on where the snow is deep and where the snow is shallow. A color readout shows the operator how much snow is under the machine, accurate to within just three or four inches.
SnowSat isn’t just the LiDAR technology. The overall package works to unite all departments at a ski resort, providing geodata management, snowmaking data, fleet management, and maintenance management. It’s all pretty mind blowing, and really shows just how cool the behind-the-scenes of a ski resort can be.
